MATruss is a program designed to provide an easy and light solution for structural calculus. By entering nodes of a structure one by one (coordinates in x, y and z), setting the constraints for it and applying some forces in x, y and z, you can see the deformations the structure will have as well as the data of the stress, forces and strains of each element of the structure. The program doesn't take into account the own weight of the elements that compose the structure, and the weight of the whole structure, focusing only on the forces you apply to the system.

Thanks to its size, this light application can be saved in any flash memory and made portable, ready to use whenever and wherever needed. The interface is very simple too: all the icons displayed correspond to every tool or option you have in the program as well as in the menu. What you see is what you get.

By setting up every single point of the system or structure in the geometric properties dialog, providing all the X, Y, Z values for every single node, you can see a linear representation of your structure, or you can go step by step or floor by floor in building the system. You are also able to modify any point or node at any time.

Once you have your basic model, you can proceed to add the constraints by choosing whether they're fixed or free or in which DOF is each point constrained: x, y or z (DOF stands for Degrees of Freedom). Then you can add some load measured in N (Newton) and the axis along which the force acts, so the system can calculate the forces and deformations.

Review summary

Pros

  • Very lightweight
  • Compatible with Windows 7,
  • All the icons you see in screen are all the tools the program has
  • Easy to understand, so you can work immediately with it

Cons

  • The input of each node of the structure done manually, by means of typing. So if you have a 300-node system it will take you a long time to input the data
  • As you cannot see the construction interactively, you will need a very good memory or write down each node somewhere else to remember some of the coordinates
  • The 3D view is isometric and there's no tool to display it immediately, you have to move it manually to get the view you desire
  • The only entry that is accepted for node identification is a number so you have to deal with lots of numbers - those corresponding to nodes and to each element

Very easy to learn!
Should have import option.

I checked it. Not worthy at all.
Incapable to proceed any real life system, because stops on the node number 221 and element number under 1000.
Doesn't allow input by the Ctrl+C_Ctrl+V method what must be a standard for large structures consisting on plenty of identical elements differing only with Z.
Doesn't allow operative change of material properties, need to delete element by element by hand, it takes around 48 hours instead just to put un-existing button "delete all properties".
My conclusion - made 99% braked, without of a least understanding what is soft enduser aims.
